Newcomer's

Recently, I chose to sit at the first step table at my home group AA meeting. A gentleman I know in the program brought a female newcomer over to meet me. This was her very first AA meeting.

It seems like just yesterday that I remember being petrified walking into my first AA meeting. Immediately, I recognized the look of fear on this woman’s face. Right away, I extended a warm welcome to her and introduced her to some of the other members in the room.. Everyone made an attempt to put her at ease.

At this particular meeting we read a passage pertaining to the first step out of the Big Book. After our reading, we go around the table to share our experience of powerlessness, the strength we find in the program, the hope that we have discovered on our journey’s and the solution that AA has to offer.

By the end of the evening it was obvious that our newcomer felt more at ease. She left the meeting with a page full of names and phone numbers of each and every woman at the meeting. Today, our newcomer called me twice. Being of service to other alcoholics is powerful. I must always remember that “Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.”

Hillary, nice to hear from you - strong message. The BB tells us "we meet frequently for the newcomer" I somehow feel as though that message gets lost these days at meetings...thank you for bringing to the forefront!

Sarah, thanks for your comment. This newcomer has the willingness to follow the suggestions she is hearing at the tables. Yesterday, she asked me to sponsor her and I have humbly accepted.
