As I have come to understand Step 3, it is just making a decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of G-d. I haven't done anything else, but make a decision. It is as if, I want to take a train to Chicago. I can want to do that, but unless I buy a ticket and get on a train going to Chicago, it is only a "want".
Now, once I make the decision, I go on immediately to Step Four. Step 4 helps me find out what within me I need to let go of in Step 7. Step 7 is the letting go step. In Step 3 I don't know what I have to let go of as yet. Step 4 is where I learn what my character defects are, so it is buying the ticket, but I still have not gotten on the train.
In Step 5 and Six I share it with another person and G-d and become willing to let go of my defects. In Step 7, after I have reviewed my 4th Step, becoming clear on what I have to let go of and became willing to do so, then I do the 7th Step Prayer and ask G-d to remove my character defects. This is the "letting go".
