Recovery Thought - Ki Seitzei
Ki Seitzei
“…And you forget a sheaf in the field..." Deuteronomy 24:19
There is one commandment that cannot be performed intentionally. When one reaps the harvest of his field and forgets a sheaf there, he is forbidden, upon realizing the oversight, to go back and fetch it. He must leave it for the poor and indigent and, in doing so, thereby fulfills a divine commandment.
The commandment concerning the forgotten sheaf elicits a uniquely lofty energy from on High – so lofty, indeed, that man cannot deliberately access its powers. This is precisely why the performance of this commandment can only come about after the fact and on accident.
Certain opportunities are so sublime that they cannot be evoked through a conscious act. Only by forgetting the sheaf can one fulfill the commandment of leaving it in the field. Only by becoming an alcoholic can one go into recovery.
The kind of spirituality offered in recovery is a way of life rarely found amongst those who have the luxury to avoid it. Perhaps we can say that the very reason this is not something anyone purposely sets out to attain, something that people only come to by “accident” is – like the commandment of the forgotten sheaf – its uniquely sublime quality.

I dont think that I unconciously started using & drinking at the early age of 14 so that I could go through 20 plus years of hell and then 8 more in prison, just so I could attain recovery and spiritual knowledge. I am not one to judge or even try to understand g-ds plan for me, and would consider it grandios and foolish to think otherwise. i am having a hard time with this one. I do believe that my curse was also my blessing and vise versa and I am here for a reason, (in recovery and writing this very message),. I also believe that my mission is to help others. However I dont think my conciousness or unconcious for that matter had anything to do with why I'm here. I did conciously choose to smoke that first joint so maybe I just contradicted my prior own statement but I definitely had no idea of the existance of a.a., n.a., recovery, or spirituality at the time of my first use so how could I have chose to do something about it, even if it was unconcious? Got the answer, let me know, not that it matters how I got here, just that I'm here!!!

I think we are in agreement. That's the whole point of my essay. Nobody purposely gets themself into this situation just so they can recover afterward. The only way it can happen is by accident.
